he was created as a part of a wartime institution's experiment that aimed at creating andriods that were virtually indistinguishable from regular humans to serve as spies. many attempts were made and the ones deemed 'failures' were either kept in the lab or destroyed. ben was deemed one of the failures. but, because of another trial, named 'joan', becoming attached to him for an unknown reason, and he was kept 'alive' until they found out what was causing her attachment to him.
eventually the lab is destroyed. ben is left the only survivor with major memory loss. all he knows is that he had lived his whole life in the lab and vaugely remembers a girl he was close with. with the institution destroyed and his stored solar energy draining quickly, he explores the destruction for a way out. on his way up to the surface (the lab was underground to remain hidden and avoid speculation) he learns about the true nature of his creation and starts to question what he should do going forward.
